Excerpt from episode:

… “See, sometimes we’re only caught in a loop if we think we’re in a loop. Rather, if we see the loops as purification, we’ll appreciate the season we’re in with a greater spiritual lens. What was the purification for Phil? Well, he starts off the film as a cynical, self-centred egotistical man who thought only of himself, who looked down upon the lowly people of Punxsutawney, and couldn’t wait to leave them. What ultimately frees him from his ego?

Love does. He would be stuck in his purgatory until he learned to love, until he learned to fix his gaze upon the people around him. By the second half of the movie, he begins to care for others, such as helping a homeless man from freezing to death and catching a boy who falls from a tree. He uses his time to grow in virtue, learning piano, mastering ice sculpting, and cultivating patience and kindness. He learns to love authentically, no longer trying to win Rita’s affection through manipulation, but by becoming a man genuinely worthy of love. Yet, for the new Phil to emerge, something of the old Phil had to die. The egoist within him had to be put to rest — and indeed, the film portrays this literally in a number of surprisingly dark, almost graphic scenes where he tries to end his life. But as the Gospel reminds us, death is not the end; it’s the doorway to resurrection — the birth of the true self.”
