“Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude.”—Viktor Frankl. The Shawshank Redemption provides us a rare glimpse of how to navigate the dark times in life. Explore Andy Dufresne’s story alongside the Gospel of hope, love and redemption.

Excerpt from episode:

… “Much later, Frankl wrote the seminal book Man’s Search for Meaning, a powerful reflection on how essential meaning is for our mental and spiritual wellbeing. He proposed that when we’re facing suffering, meaning is not always found in grand gestures or dramatic answers—but in our choice of response. As he famously put it, “Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances.” And it’s often this quiet choice that becomes our deepest act of resilience.

There’s a scene in The Shawshank Redemption that I particularly love — the moment when Andy plays a Mozart opera record over the prison’s PA system. He does this knowing full well it will cost him — and it does. He’s thrown into solitary confinement for two weeks. But Andy knew it was worth it. Because for a few precious moments, that music soared over the grey walls and razor wire, inviting every prisoner to taste beauty again — to remember that there is still a world beyond the bars, a life worth hoping for and fighting for, if only they hang on. Beauty pierces the soul. It’s a kind of good pain — one that stretches and lifts the soul beyond itself, and ultimately toward God. Later, Andy connects that music to hope — the very thing the prison most tried to crush, and the thing that kept him sane even in the hole.

I share this scene because when we’re in the thick of darkness, beauty can have the same effect on us, dear friends. A breath of fresh air, gazing up at the stars, the warmth of sunlight on our skin, hearing our favourite song — these moments can shake the soul out of its inner prison and reawaken it to the bigger story we’re in. So this is another small but powerful thing you can do when life feels heavy: make space for beauty. Pursue it, receive it. These moments don’t fix everything, but they can steadily free your soul from despair, reminding it that in the end, the shadow is only a passing thing.”
