When Ph refuses, God sends 10 plagues to smite Egypt and all who lie there. But what exactly is God doing in this moment? At first glance, He may seem anything but gentle, tame, or even fair. After all, what kind of God poisons the Nile, sends hail, boils, locusts, and blots out the sun? Biblical scholars, however, invite us to see something deeper. The plagues are not random acts of destruction; rather, they reveal God’s supremacy over the so-called gods of Egypt. Each plagues corresponds to an Egyptian god. By turning the Nile into blood, God demonstrates power over Osiris, god of the Nile. By sending boils, He shows His authority over Ptah, god of healing. The hail and fire? A direct challenge to Nut, goddess of the sky. The plague of darkness? A strike against Ra, the mighty sun god. And finally, the death of the firstborn—this is a confrontation with Pharaoh himself, considered divine. With this act, God declares: your power, your lineage, ends here. Powerful, isn’t it?
