A single idea can define us – or destroy us. Rediscover the power of ideas, and how our dreams are powerful messengers from the subconscious! We’ll be joined by St Thomas Aquinas too.
Excerpt from episode:
“Dear friends, ideas are powerful. They are potent. They are even deadly. Every action we take stems first from an idea. What’s the idea that drives you today to listen to this episode? Saito, Cobb, and the other characters in Inception understood this truth. Their entire mission was centered around planting one idea in Fischer’s mind, knowing that a single idea could reshape the course of his life. The idea they sought to implant was simple yet profound: that his dying father was pleased with him, rather than displeased. Saito understood that if Fischer believed his father approved of him, it would free him from the need to prove himself through the family business. He would no longer feel driven to sacrifice his life in the corporate world in order to gain his father’s approval. What we see here is a compelling illustration of how changing one idea or memory—can dramatically alter a person’s outward reality. Conversely, we also see how one single idea can also destroy someone. This happens tragically with Mal, Cobb’s wife. The idea that Cobb implanted in her mind—the belief that the only way to “wake up” from a dream was to kill herself—was initially helpful in awakening her to the truth. But once Mal had experienced the bliss of the dream world, she could never be satisfied in the “real” world. The idea of suicide as the key to “waking up” haunted her, and, ultimately, she took her own life, thinking it would free her from the dream. Sadly, she never did wake up. Her tragic end shows us the devastating power of a false idea—or a lie—and how it can lead to destruction… “
